Freddy and Adriana are co-owners in a small but growing beverage business in Cartagena, Colombia. They work a lot, waking up at 4 AM every day to start production of their organic coconut and rice-based beverages. The business was growing as more clients and stores placed orders for their beverages, but there was an ongoing problem. Their health was suffering.
Dealing with everything from increasing belly fat, to increased feelings of lethargy, more headaches, low energy, mood swings, bad sleep, constant cravings and constipation, Freddy and Adriana started implementing our whole food plant-based program combined with functional strength training. Follow along as they share their progress, how they are feeling and the challenges they are facing as they create this new lifestyle.
Freddy and Adriana jumped into their whole food plant-based transformation with full enthusiasm and force. Before undertaking this transformation, their diet consisted of lots of processed flour products (like arepas), cheese, sautéed meats, lots of salt, and a solid amount of sugar. They also always cooked with oil (they primarily cook on the stovetop as they don't have an oven). They ate vegetables and fruits, but never enough and never with sufficient variety.
They have eliminated all animal products from their diet, have stopped adding salt and have learned how to cook everything without oil. Their staple breakfast has switched from an arepa with cheese and sautéed meat (carne asada) alongside coffee with milk to a nice big bowl of fruit (pineapples, apples, oranges) with flaxseed sprinkled on top and black coffee on the side. For lunch and dinner, they are incorporating whole grains and eating at least 1 cup of legumes a day while ensuring they are eating some form of cruciferous vegetable and green leafy vegetables every day.
Both Freddy and Adriana are experiencing far better digestion and the constipation has gone away, resulting in a far less feeling of "heaviness." They are feeling more energetic and less fatigued and are incorporating 15-30 minutes of exercise and stretching daily. Adriana mentioned her skin is starting to clear up quite a bit and is far less dry than before. Their daughter Briana is also enjoying her full plates of vegetables, beans and whole grains and loves having pineapple for breakfast.
Freddy is going to the bathroom twice a day (#2 haha), compared to once every 3 days before. His weight has gone down, likely the extra water weight that gets retained when consuming lots of salt.
Adriana is enjoying making pasta (without oil and added salt) with delicious tomato sauces filled with garlic and Freddy is learning new oil-free dressings he can incorporate into his salads. Their energy continues to be strong and they are sleeping a lot better with much less morning grogginess. They are making sure to incorporate their 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily as well.
Given they are in quarantine, they are doing 15 minutes a day of functional strength training, 5-10 minutes of stretching and yoga and 10 minutes of more high-intensity training 3-4 times a week. It's challenging and they are making sure to build up their strength and stamina slowly to avoid burnout, but they are feeling good moving their bodies in an active manner.
